Ahmed, 18 (Sami Outalbali from the Netflix show *Sex Education*), French of
Algerian descent, grew up in the suburbs of Paris. At university, he meets
Farah (Zbeida Belhajamor), a young Tunisian girl, full of energy, who has
just arrived in Paris. While discovering a corpus of sensual and erotic
Arabic literature he never imagined existed, Ahmed falls deep in love with
Farah, and although literally overwhelmed with desire, he will try to
resist it.
Sami Outalbali was nominated for the 2022 César for Most Promising Actor.

In 2019, following his short film *Les Indes Galantes* (SFFF 2018), Clément
Cogitore was invited by the Opéra National de Paris to direct the complete
opera-ballet by Jean-Philippe Rameau. Together with choreographer Bintou
Dembélé, they reinvented Jean-Philippe Rameau’s baroque masterpiece by
bringing together urban dancers (hip-hop, krump, break, voguing) and opera
singers.
Philippe Beziat's film follows this human and artistic adventure, from
rehearsals to public performances.
Can a new generation of artists successfully storm the Bastille today?

*Small Country: An African Childhood* is a powerful historical drama based
on the semi-autobiographical book from Gaël Faye, a popular Franco-Rwandan
singer, rapper, and writer.
Early 1990s. Gabriel (Djibril Vancoppenolle), 10, lives in a wealthy
neighborhood in Burundi, his “small country,” with his parents and sister.
His father (Jean-Paul Rouve, *C'est la vie!* - MiniFest 2018) is white and
his mother (the magnificent Isabelle Kabano) is black, with much of her
family across the border in Rwanda. Gabriel is a happy, carefree kid
enjoying life with his friends as Burundi is celebrating the free election
of its President.
Then in 1993, tensions in neighboring Rwanda between the Hutu and Tutsi
spill over, threatening Gabriel's family and his innocence.
Author Gaël Faye was born in Bujumbura, Burundi of a French father and
Rwandan mother. The film follows a fictional mixed-race boy growing up in
Burundi at the onset of civil strife, and it is through the eyes of this
innocent protagonist that we see the dissolution of a country from
burgeoning democracy into warring tribal factions.
The first time we presented a film by Eric Barbier, the historical
drama *Promise
At Dawn
<https://www.sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2019_promesse-de-l-aube.h…>*
in
2019, it overwhelmingly won your hearts and our Audience Prize! We are
happy to present Barbier’s follow-up to *Promise at Dawn* as our first
attempt at celebrating Black History Month! *→
