This deeply affecting drama is both a beautiful love story and a document
about the beginnings of the French chapter of ACT UP in the early 1990s, as
a group of activists goes to battle for those stricken with HIV/AIDS.
*BPM* was nominated for no less than thirteen *César Awards *and won six of
them: *Best Film*, *Best Supporting Actor* (Antoine Reinartz), *Most
Promising Actor *(Nahuel Pérez Biscayart), Best Original Screenplay, *Best
Editing* and *Best Original Music*. It received awards and prizes all over

CONTEMPT by Jean-Luc Godard
Starring the sexiest French star, Brigitte Bardot, *Contempt* is probably
one of Godard's most beloved film (although not by him)! *Contempt*
portrays the end of a marriage, but it is also an examination of the
position of the filmmaker in commercial cinema. This was a very personal
issue for Godard who, with *Contempt*, was, for the first time in in his
career, working with a big budget under legendary Italian producer Carlo
Ponti's supervision, and with a star of Bardot's magnitude.
*Contempt* is the perfect companion to the following film on our

GODARD MON AMOUR by Michel Hazanavicius
This hilarious biopic is not only a tribute to the troubled genius who is
Jean-Luc Godard, as well as the chronicle of the end of a marriage, but
also an homage to the spirit of May 1968 of which we celebrate this year
the 50th anniversary. As he did with his Oscar winning film *The Artist*
and the *OSS 117* series (SFFF 2008 and 2010), director Michel Hazanavicius
delivers another tribute to classic cinema, wildly funny yet deeply
engaging. Godard has said that this movie was "a stupid, stupid idea". Why
don't you come and find out for yourself?

LA VILLA by Robert Guédiguian
At the SFFF, we LOVE Robert Guédiguian and we are really pleased to to
bring you his latest and -of course- magnificent drama, *The House by the
Sea*. Three sibblings reunite after their father had a stroke, in the
picturesque villa built and owned by the old man. The chemistry between the
three leads, all part of Guediguian’s longtime screen family, is
effortless, and it is always a pleasure to see them perform together. With *The
House by the Sea*, Guédiguian (a regular of the SFFF, from *The Town is
Quiet*, part of our orignal line-up in 2002, to most recently *Don't tell
Me the Boy Was Mad* - SFFF 2016) tells one of his favorite stories: a group
of everyday people trying to get by as they grapple with whatever life has
thrown their way, reminiscing about the past, anxious about the present,
dreaming about the future, all teh while trying to be good people.

GASPARD AT THE WEDDING by Antony Cordier
On the train to his father's wedding, Gaspard (France's new heartthrob
Félix Moati, also starring in* Some Like it Veiled
<https://www.sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2018_cherchez-la-femme.htm>*)
meets an eccentric young woman who agrees to accompany him as his pretend
girlfriend. With her beside him, he feels ready to set foot again in the
zoo owned by his very peculiar family, itself some sort of a zoo... Daring,
refreshing and original, *Gaspard at the Wedding* is a hybrid film
zigzagging between genres, simultaneously feeling like a crazy comedy, a
romance and a family drama about inheritance, emotional ties, and
ultimately the end of childhood, all with a hint of a fairy tale.

SOME LIKE IT VEILED by Sou Abadi
Armand (France's new heartthrob Félix Moati, also starring in* Gaspard at
the Wedding
<https://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2018_gaspard.htm>*) and
Leila (French pop star Camélia Jordana) are in love. But when Leila's big
brother returns from a trip to Yemen as a full-blown Islamist with a desire
to quell his sister's profane Western ways by keeping her prisoner in their
apartment, Armand must find a way to free Leila... *Some Like It Veiled *takes
the cross-dressing concept of the Billy Wilder classic *Some Like It Hot*
and brings it to the age of Islamic fundamentalism. The result: an
extremely funny, laughing-out-loud, politically-incorrect -but always
respectful- French farce.
Writer/director Sou Abadi was born in Iran and moved to France with her
family, at the age of 15, following the Iranian Revolution. *Some Like It

DOUBLE LOVER by François Ozon
François Ozon's tribute to David Cronenberg and Brian de Palma is an
elegant and erotic psychological thriller, with twins and a few twists.
Crafting a deliriously cinematic web of suspense, shock, eroticism, and
power dynamics, writer/director Ozon (*Frantz *- Mini Fest 2016, *Young &
Beautiful *- SFFF 2014, *In the House* - SFFF 2013) invites us to enter the
intense story of a woman venturing into dangerous romance.

LUNA by Elsa Diringer
*Luna *is a luminous film about choices, and the importance of making the
right ones! Sixteen-year-old Luna is a happy-go-lucky kind of girl. She
also hangs out with the wrong crowd and is head-over-heels in love with bad
boy Ruben. For him, she would do anything, including participating in the
gratuitous and brutal assault on Alex (the adorable Rod Paradot, *Standing
Tall *- SFFF 2016) a young graffiti artist and trumpeter. Elsa Diringer’s
sensitive first feature delves into the question of violence, individual
responsibility in the face of heinous collective behavior, and second
chances.

CUSTODY by Xavier Legrand
After the shock created by his powerful Oscar-nominated short film, *Just
Before Losing Everything* (SFFF 2013), Xavier Legrand's first feature,
*Custody*, was one of the most awaited films of 2018. And it doesn't
disappoint! We are proud to close the 17th Sacramento French Film Festival
with Legrand's masterpiece of suspense and tension, a timely and gripping
thriller about a woman’s battle to get rid of her abusive ex-husband who
uses their young son as a pawn to manipulate her. It is always an exciting
feeling to witness the birth of a new talent and we hope you'll be as blown
away as we were by *Custody*!
*GET TO KNOW OUR OUR 2nd WEEKEND GUESTS.*
[image: Antony Cordier]
*ANTONY CORDIER*
Antony Cordier was born in Tours in a working-class family to whom he
dedicated his first feature film, the documentary Beau comme un camion (As
Beautiful as a Truck). He studied cinema at La Fémis, in the editing
department. His first feature fiction film, Douches Froides (Cold Showers),
premiered at the Cannes Directors Fortnight in 2005, and won the Louis
Delluc Prize for Best First Film and major awards at Verona and Taiwan film
festivals. His second feature film, Happy Few (Four Lovers), starring
Marina Foïs, Roschdy Zem, Elodie Bouchez and Nicolas Duvauchelle, was
selected in competition at the Venice International Film Festival in 2010.
Gaspard at the Wedding, presented this year at the SFFF in its U.S.
PREMIERE, is his third feature film.
*GASPARD AT THE WEDDING
<https://www.sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2018_gaspard.htm> will
be shown in its U.S. PREMIERE on Saturday, June 23 at 6:10pm.*
[image: Sionann O'Neill]
*SIONANN O'NEILL*
Sionann O’Neill was born in the Bay Area and grew up in Quincy, a small
town in the Sierra Nevada mountains northeast of Sacramento. After
graduating from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, she
worked for three years to save money, then left for Europe in 1988.
She settled in France and began studying cinema at the Sorbonne, where she
formulated a desire to do subtitles.
A stroke of good fortune led her to meet then-fledgling filmmaker François
Ozon, who needed someone to subtitle his shorts. She has gone on to
translate all of Mr. Ozon’s films, and has been working for Agnès Varda and
a host of emerging young directors in France. For several years, she
supervised the French subtitling team for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
She also works as an interpreter for actors and directors at the Cannes
Film Festival. She currently lives in Normandy.
*Sionann will be providing her insights in Q&As following the screenings of
DOUBLE LOVER

*GUILLAUME CARAMELLE*
Guillaume Caramelle is a young director (short films and advertisements)
and screenwriter who scrutinizes society to translate it into images.
His films tell his story, but more generally that of a dissolute youth in
search of identity. Caramelle's goal is not only to observe, but to probe
the woes of our society and explore its limits in a decidedly modern tone
that alternates between sarcasm and solemnity.
At 25, he directed his first short film, Au Souvenir d'une lune, which
follows a young
graduate anxious about his future. His second film, Nikki Marianne, a
humorous teenage short, was selected in many festivals in Europe and the
United States and bought by OCS and Short TV. In his third and latest short
film, One Night, presented this year at the SFFF, he tackles in less than
four minutes the themes of disability and prostitution.
*ONE NIGHT
<https://www.sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2018_shortfilmsfeature.htm>

*First Feature!*
* SUNDAY, JUNE 24 - 2:05pm *
*LUNA <https://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2018_luna.htm>* by
Elsa Diringer
*Screening followed by Q&A with Sionann O'Neill
<https://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/program.htm#guests>*
[image: Luna]
LUNA by Elsa Diringer
*Luna *is a luminous film about choices, and the importance of making the
right ones! Sixteen-year-old Luna is a happy-go-lucky kind of girl. She
also hangs out with the wrong crowd and is head-over-heels in love with bad
boy Ruben. For him, she would do anything, including participating in the
gratuitous and brutal assault on Alex (the adorable Rod Paradot, *Standing
Tall *- SFFF 2016) a young graffiti artist and trumpeter. Elsa Diringer’s
sensitive first feature delves into the question of violence, individual
responsibility in the face of heinous collective behavior, and second
chances.
*Closing Night! SUNDAY, JUNE 24 – 7:15pm*
*CUSTODY
<https://www.sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2018_custody.htm>*
(Jusqu'à la garde) by Xavier Legrand
*Screening followed by Q&A with Guillaume Caramelle

the short film One Night that will precede the feature.*
*The CLOSING NIGHT "PINK CHAMPAGNE AND DESSERT" PARTY will start
immediately after the film. With Live Music by the Jazz Report & DJ
Christophe.*
[image: Custody]

*ONE NIGHT
<https://www.sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2018_shortfilmsfeature.htm>
will be shown on closing night, Sunday, June 24 at 7:15pm, prior to the
closing feature, CUSTODY
