*Promise at Dawn* by Eric Barbier- SFFF 2019 - Special Encore screening
Saturday, June 29
Based on award winning writer Romain Garys' autobiographical novel, *Promise
at Dawn* is an epic and sumptuous drama, at times comical and always
poignant. It tells the romantic story of Romain and the bond that unites
him to his endearing and self-sacrificing single mother (portrayed by
Charlotte Gainsbourg, in a phenomenal performance as the ultimate Jewish
mother). He owes his passion for life, strength, and social successes to
her, but she is also his burden: how could any woman’s love compare to her
boundless, if overbearing, maternal love?

*ARTIST'S STATEMENT*
Hello, my name is Jermaine Tilson. I am an abstract artist, and I am from
many different places, but to me, home is California. I've been an artist
since the age of 6, and I am self-taught. In my life I have never taken an
art class to get me where I'm at. I’ve put in hard work, sweat, and tears,
coming from a very hard background. Through it all I’ve put my heart and
emotions into my artwork to perfect it. I shape my art and it puts me where
I need to be. I've grown up in foster care, and I use my life experience to
craft a healthy lifestyle to live a life where things are clearer and woke.
The type of art I do is mixed media abstract art. I intend to make a
positive impact on foster youth and former foster youth. I want to give
them a positive influence and inspiration, as well as teach them that there
are other ways to make it out and live positively, even when things are
hard. You have to hustle hard to make your dreams a reality. I'm currently
living in Sacramento, California, in a transitional housing program for
aged out foster youth. I was born in Newport, Rhode Island, but raised 12
years of my life in Providence. I've been around a lot of different places,
but my dream goal is to travel on tour around the world with my art. See
more of Tilson's work here <https://www.facebook.com/youngt92/>.

[image: Benjamin] [image: Romane] [image: David]
In 2019, three guests will be joining us from France at the Crest Theatre
to introduce their films and answer your questions at the end of the
screenings.
*BENJAMIN SERERO Director of the short animated documentary ESPERANÇA
<https://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2019_shortsfilmsfeatures.htm>
Sunday, June 23 - 2:00pm (prior to AMIN
<https://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2019_amin.htm>) *
Born in 1975, Benjamin Serero is a graduate of the prestigious FEMIS School
(Image Department). He started his career as a director of photography,
then created his production company, BEPPIE FILMS, in order to direct and
produce his own films, and those of others.
He is particularly interested in documentary forms and social topics. His
work frequently deals with immigration and integration. After hearing
stories of immigrant teenagers when he was visiting a classroom, he got the
idea for a collection of animated films, including *Esperança*, which gave
him the opportunity to work with animators Cécile Rousset and Jeanne
Paturle.
*ROMANE BOHRINGER Director and star of the comedy IN THE MOVE FOR LOVE
<https://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2019_amour-flou.htm>Saturday,
June 29 - 6:10pm*
Born in 1973, actress Romane Bohringer made her theatrical debut in 1991
when she performed under the direction of famed stage director Peter Brook
in Shakespeare's *The Tempest*. The following year, she achieved instant
fame with two films: *The Accompanist *(*L’Accompagnatrice) *by Claude
Miller, and especially *Savage Nights* (*Les Nuits Fauves*) by Cyril
Collard, for which she won the César for Best New Actress (the film won the
César for Best Film).
She has made about 30 films so far and is equally comfortable in dramatic
roles as she is in comedies. She was recently seen in Yann Gonzalez's *Knife
+ Heart* (*Un Couteau dans le Coeur*) in official competition at the 2018
Cannes Film Festival.
Lately, she has gone back to her first love and mainly spends her time on
stage. She has performed under the direction of Pierre Pradinas, Michel
Didym, Hans Peter Cloos, and Irina Brook; exploring texts as exhilarating
as those of Shakespeare, Brecht, Hugo, Tennessee Williams, Chekhov,
Labiche, Ionesco, Gabor Rassov, Lina Prosa , and Annie Ernaux.
In 2018, she co-directed her first film, *In the Move for Love* (*L'Amour
Flou*), with Philippe Rebbot (actor, screenwriter, and father of her two
children). The two of them also star in this comedy inspired by their happy
separation. The film was a critical and box office success and was
nominated for a 2019 César in the Best First Feature Film category. Made
with a small budget, it was named "The most profitable film of 2018” by the
trade magazine Le Film Français.
*DAVID ROUX*
*Director of the drama BREATH OF LIFE
<https://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2019_l-ordre-des-medecins.htm>
Sunday, June 30 - 1:20pm.*
David Roux was born in 1977 in Paris. A theater critic for 15 years, he was
also assistant director and literary manager of a film development company,
Initiative Film, before he started writing and directing short films: *Leur
jeunesse* (*Their Youth*) in 2012 and *Repetitions* in 2014. *Breath of
Life* is his first feature film.
