*13th WINTER SHORTS FESTThursday, February 27, 2020Tower Theatre - 7pm*
*THE REGION'S PREMIER FILM EVENT Carla Meyer - Sacramento Bee*
*OPENING at THE TOWER THEATRE this FRIDAY The 2020 OSCAR CONTENDER,*
*LES MISERABLES by LADJ LY*
*SPECIAL SCREENING Presented by the SACRAMENTO FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL * *FRIDAY,
JANUARY 24, 2020 @ 7:15pm - TOWER THEATRE*
[image: Les Miserables]
Prior to our 13th WINTER SHORTS FEST (*to be held at the Tower Theatre on
Thursday, February 27 - see below*), *we are very pleased to partner with
the Tower Theatre on the occasion of the release of the intense and
powerful LES MISERABLES directed by Ladj Ly. *
*Les Misérables*, Ladj Ly's first feature film, won the Jury Prize at the
latest Cannes Film Festival, and is nominated for a 2020 Oscar in the Best
International Feature Film Category. It deals with the universal issues of
police violence, injustice and integration. It was one of the most talked
about films released last year in France.
*Please join us this Friday, January 24: the 7:15pm screening will be
followed by a Q&A with le Professeur Kevin Elstob!*
*SYNOPSIS:* Stéphane, a cop with a high moral compass, has recently joined
the Anti-Crime Brigade in Montfermeil in the eastern suburbs of Paris.
Working alongside his new colleagues Chris and Gwada – both experienced
members of the team – he quickly discovers that tensions run high not only
between neighbourhood gangs, but also between the gangs and the police. One
day, an arrest goes wrong and things quickly spiral out of control. Filmed
verité style, pairing fast edits in action scenes with lingering,
documentary-like shots at other times, Ly creates a bold, in-your-face
feel. Nowhere is that more the case than in the explosive ending, when
violence and despair reach a fever pitch.
Inspired by the 2005 riots, director Ladj Ly explores contemporary
Montfermeil, the same place where Victor Hugo chose to set part of “Les
Misérables” (the home to Thenardier’s Inn). More than 150 years later, the
similarities between today’s angry, hoodie-wearing youth and Gavroche are
only too clear.

The final film from the late, beloved Agnès Varda is a playful, profound,
and personal "masterclass" encompassing her six-decade artistic journey. M
ischievous and wise, she guides us on a tour through her brilliant career,
shedding new light on her films, photography, and recent installation
works, while offering her one-of-a-kind reflections on everything from
filmmaking to feminism to aging.
Suffused with the people, places, and things she loved (Jacques Demy, cats,
colors, beaches, heart-shaped potatoes,...) this wonderfully distinctive
work of imaginative autobiography is a warmly human, touchingly bittersweet
parting gift from one of cinema’s most luminous talents. Watch the trailer

The final film from the late, beloved Agnès Varda is a characteristically
playful, profound, and personal summation of the director’s own brilliant
career. At once impish and wise, she acts as our spirit guide on a
free-associative tour through her six-decade artistic journey, shedding new
light on her films, photography, and recent installation works while
offering her one-of-a-kind reflections on everything from filmmaking to
feminism to aging. Suffused with the people, places, and things she
