*FEATURED FILMS*
*SALT OF THE EARTH* (1954)
At New Mexico's Empire Zinc mine, Mexican-American workers protest the
unsafe work conditions and unequal wages compared to their Anglo
counterparts. Ramon Quintero (Juan Chacon) helps organize the strike, but
he is shown to be a hypocrite by treating his pregnant wife, Esperanza
(Rosaura Revueltas), with a similar unfairness. When an injunction stops
the men from protesting, however, the gender roles are reversed, and women
find themselves on the picket lines while the men stay at home. Watch
trailer here. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDe80G96K1Q>
*PRIDE* (2014)
In this comical dramatization of actual events, gay activists from London
help miners in South Wales during their lengthy strike of the National
Union of Mineworkers in the summer of 1984. This lively and funny
dramatization of the “Pits and Perverts” campaign portrays the empathy and
solidarity built among 2 unlikely groups, both targeted under
Thatcherism. Watch
trailer here. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SaCfLIzy00>
