In 2012, we have great programs for you!
It will all start with our *5th Annual Winter French Short Film Screening*, on
Saturday, February 4th at the Verge Center for the Arts. On Saturday March

As you can see, preparations for 2012 are already underway! The team of
volunteers from the Planning Committee, our Board of Directors and myself
work all year long, on film selection, marketing, event organization, and

The SFFF depends on the generous donations
<http://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/donation-form-2012.pdf>of our
sponsors and friends to keep us going each and every year. Ticket and
pass sales cover only about 40% of our operating costs and the remainder
must be raised through our loyal supporters. We apply for grants. We
reach out to banks, law offices, council members, and other entities in our
community as well as individuals like you. We are grateful for the
businesses and individuals who care about the success of the SFFF and know
how important it is as a cultural event in Sacramento.
*As the end of 2011 is fast approaching we would be very grateful if you
would consider the SFFF as one of the recipients of your **Holiday giving.* The

*2/ FRENCH FILMS PLAYING IN SACRAMENTO*
One impact of the SFFF on Sacramento's cultural life is the increasing
number of French films playing every year in Sacramento, both at the Crest
and the Tower Theatres. The success of the SFFF made Sacramento an
attractive place for US distributors of French cinema, and the last week of
2011 is a feast for French movie lovers in Sacramento!*

*THE WOMEN ON THE 6th FLOOR (Les Femmes du 6ème étage), the hit comedy of
the 10th SFFF continues at the Crest Theatre this week.
*Paris, 1960. Jean-Louis (Fabrice Luchini, Potiche) lives a bourgeois
existence absorbed in his work, cohabitating peacefully with his neurotic
socialite wife Suzanne (Sandrine Kiberlain, Mademoiselle Chambon) while
their children are away at boarding school. The couple's world is turned
upside-down when they hire a Spanish maid Maria (Natalia Verbeke). Through
Maria, Jean-Louis is introduced to an alternative reality just a few floors
up on the building's sixth floor, the servants' quarters. He befriends a
group of sassy Spanish maids (Carmen Maura, Lola Duenas, Berta Ojea, Nuria
Sole, Concha Calan), refugees of the Franco regime, who teach him there's
more to life than stocks and bonds. The women's influence on the house
brings change... muy rápido! -- (C) Strand *Watch trailer

*LE HAVRE, acclaimed Finnish director Aki kaurismaki's latest film, opened
at the Crest Theatre on Friday. *
In this warmhearted portrait of the French harbor city that gives the film
its name, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa (Blondin Miguel) into
the path of Marcel Marx (André Wilms), a well-spoken bohemian who works as
a shoeshiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his
community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for
deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the
reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre
Melville and Marcel Carné, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight. *Watch
trailer here. <http://janusfilms.com/lehavre/index.html>*

*THE ARTIST, by Michel Hazanavicius starring Jean Dujardin (OSS 117) opened
at the Tower Theatre on Friday.*
The Artist takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932 and focuses on a
declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out
of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. The film itself is a silent film
and shot in black-and-white. The film has received wide praise from critics
and many accolades. Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Cannes
Film Festival, where the film premiered. The film has six Golden Globe
nominations, the most of 2011. *Watch trailer
