*CREST THEATRE 15th SFFF - JUNE 17-26, 2016 *
*"THE REGION'S PREMIER FILM EVENT" Carla Meyer - Sacramento Bee*
Dear Friends,
>From the bottom of our hearts, MERCI, MERCI, MERCI for being at the Crest
yesterday and sharing this day of mourning and celebration with us. It
meant the world to us to see your smiling faces, hug so many of you, hear
your kind words, and to have you enjoy the fantastic films we presented!
For those of you interested, there will be a *vigil **held in Sacramento **to
honor the victims of the attacks in Paris and their families, tonight at
5pm at **New Glory Craft Brewery <http://www.newglorybeer.com/home> - 8251
Alpine Ave, Sacramento 95826. *
Bring candles, flags, flowers, words of kindness, or just yourself...
Also, many people have asked about the text I read on stage last night. It
moved me to tears when I first read it and I'd like for the author to be
recognized, but unfortunately it has to remain anonymous for now:
*“France embodies everything religious zealots everywhere hate: enjoyment
of life here on earth in a myriad little ways: a fragrant cup of coffee and
buttery croissant in the morning, beautiful women in short dresses smiling
freely on the street, the smell of warm bread, a bottle of wine shared with
friends, a dab of perfume, children playing in the Luxembourg Gardens, the
right not to believe in any god, not to worry about calories, to flirt and
smoke and enjoy sex outside of marriage, to take vacations, to read any
book you want, to go to school for free, to play, to laugh, to argue, to
make fun of prelates and politicians alike, to leave worrying about the
afterlife to the dead. No country does life on earth better than the
French.”*
LIBERTÉ, ÉGALITÉ, FRATERNITÉ !
Love,
Cécile

*1pm - MUSTANG
<http://www.sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2015_mustang.htm> *
*(97 min) by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, 2015 - DRAMA*
It’s the beginning of the summer in a remote Black Sea coastal village in
northern Turkey, and Lale and her four sisters wildly begin their summer
break. A villager sees them horsing around with boys and informs their
grandmother who has raised them. Fearing the girls' virtue and their
marriage prospects have been compromised, she decides, along with the
girls’ uncle, to engage in a systematic campaign to tame them into
traditional female roles.
Directed by first-time Turkish filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven and co-written
by French writer/director Alice Winocour, and presented in its original
Turkish version, Mustang is a wonderful example of France's long-time
interest in producing films around the world, and it has been chosen to
represent France at the 2016 Academy Awards. Besides Mustang, France is
involved in the production of 13 films among the 81 considered for the 2016
Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
Just last month, MUSTANG received no less than 6 prizes at the 60th SEMINCI
(Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid, Spain): Silver Spike for Best
Film; Pilar Miro Prize for Best New Director (ex-aequo); Audience Prize;
FIPRESCI critics Prize; Youth Prize; & Sociograph Award!
Do not miss it!!!
*3:05pm - THE MEASURE OF A MAN
<http://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2015_loi-du-marche.htm>*
*(La Loi du marché, 93 min) by Stéphane Brizé, 2015 – SOCIAL DRAMA*
Thierry (Vincent Lindon, in a superb performance recognized with the Best
Actor award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival) is 51 years old and has been
unemployed for 20 months. We follow him on his quest for a much needed job
and as he tries to keep his life in order, with his wife and their special
needs son. Lacking any other options, he ends up taking a job as a security
guard in a supermarket, a position that soon puts him into a thorny moral
dilemma. A poignant and unforgettable film about the everyday social
cruelty of today’s modern world.
This original and haunting docu-style drama was one of the most acclaimed
films of the latest Cannes Film Festival.
*5:05pm - ONE WILD MOMENT
<http://sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2015_un-moment-d-egarement.htm>
**(Un Moment d'égarement, 105 min) by Jean-François Richet, 2015 - COMEDY*
In this sexy and provocative comedy, two longtime friends Laurent and
Antoine (portrayed by two of France’s most charismatic and compelling
leading men, Vincent Cassel and François Cluzet) take their respective
teenage daughters on a beach vacation in beautiful Corsica. One evening at
the beach, Antoine’s daughter, Louna, seduces Laurent. She is in love, but
for Laurent it was a mistake… Upset at Laurent's rejection, and without
revealing her lover's name, Louna confides in her father, who tries by any
means to discover who his daughter's lover is. How long can the secret be
kept hidden?...
This remake of Claude Berri’s 1977 cult film (Hollywood’s own 1984 remake,
Blame it on Rio, was directed by Stanley Donen and starred Michael Caine,
Joseph Bologna and a young Demi Moore) was one a box office hit in France
this summer!
*7:15pm - ONCE IN A LIFETIME
<http://www.sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2015_heritiers.htm> *
*(Les Héritiers, 105 min) by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, 2014 – DRAMA*
In this inspirational drama based on a true story, high school history
teacher Anne Gueguen (the always perfect Ariane Ascaride) has to face her
worst nightmare: a multicultural classroom full of struggling and tough
inner-city kids. But Anne has a quality that these students don’t encounter
often: she actually cares about them, and she has an idea to inspire them.
Over the objections of the head of the school, she challenges the class to
enter a national history contest with a project on children and teenage
victims of the Nazi Regime. At first, the students are reluctant, but
working together will give them the confidence to achieve more than they
ever thought possible... A feel-good film for all audiences!
All five films on the program of our 2nd annual Sac Mini Fall French Film
Fest are excellent, but we'd like to particularly recommend Once in A
Lifetime (showtime: 7:15pm) to all middle school, high school & college
students, and their parents and teachers.
A real, thought provoking crowd pleaser for everyone!
*9:25pm - WELCOME TO NEW YORK
<http://www.sacramentofrenchfilmfestival.org/movie2015_welcome_to_nyc.htm> *
*(125 min) by Abel Ferrara, 2014 - DRAMA*
Inspired by one of the most high-profile public implosions in recent
memory, Welcome to New York follows a prominent French financier (Gérard
Depardieu) as he spirals out of control during a drug and sex-fueled trip
to America—culminating in a shocking incident involving a hotel maid and
his subsequent arrest. Jacqueline Bisset co-stars as his wife in this
provocative portrait of a man whose fall from grace sent shockwaves
throughout the world. In the film, the protagonist’s name is “Devereaux,”
but he is clearly inspired by the former International Monetary Fund (IMF)
chief and one-time French presidential hopeful, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who
in 2011 was arrested in New York on charges of assaulting a hotel maid. The
mighty Depardieu gives a fearless performance in this
ripped-from-the-headlines saga of sin and sleaze from boundary-pushing Abel
Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York), directing his first French
co-production.
... And to reply to some burning questions: yes you will see Depardieu
naked. And no, it is not as pleasant as in GOING PLACES! :-)
