Neighbors,
Today between 3:00 and 3:30 pm at 304 Oriole Drive my wife and I witnessed a
home break in and robbery in broad daylight. As I was away from the house
picking up kids from school, my wife, Tara, came home early from work and
noticed a black/dark blue car(see attached photo - I took this once I came
into the neighborhood 10 minutes later and they were still there) at the
intersection of Navajo and Oriole. The car was just sitting at the stop
sign staring at the 304 Oriole house when Tara noticed them. The car then
turned right and drove up Oriole towards the interstate and then made a
U-turn and came back and then pulled into the 304 Oriole driveway. They did
this even though she was still sitting in our driveway, 3704 Lerch, watching
them. There were two men (black/Latino mix?) One man got out and went up
to the front door and looked in the window. Then he went around back while
the other man stayed in the car. At 3:12 pm Tara called 911 and reported
what was going on. The man came from around back and got back into the car
and drove off. Tara followed them down Oriole to North Terrace to
Germantown to Navajo back to 304 Oriole and then Tara drove just around the
corner to keep her distance. She saw the driver get out and go back around
to the back while the 2nd man stayed in the car. I came into the
neighborhood via Oriole and drove by 304 Oriole to see the car there and to
even snap a photo as I drove by at 3:25. I pulled around the block so I
could keep my distance while being able to see what was going on. I saw the
2nd man in the car get out and go to the front door that had been opened by
the other guy. At that point I called 911 again at 3:27pm. Then they both
started carrying stuff out. First the Xbox and then a very large TV. They
then drove off toward N. Terrace and disappeared at 3:31 pm as Tara was on
her phone with 911. At 3:31 and 30 seconds a police car drove up Oriole to
the house, but it was too late. I wonder if he didn't even pass the perps
as they were driving in the opposite direction. The first officer on the
scene said that he had gotten the call 5 minutes prior to arriving. When
Tara first called me about what was going on, I was at Hamilton Place and
still got there well before the police.
We are still dumbfounded as to what we witnessed in broad daylight, but more
amazed at the fact that it took 20 minutes for the police to show up. Once
they showed up there were 5 or more officers on the scene. They claimed
that it was shift change and that they were all 20 minutes away at Amnicola.
The officers also said the dispatch had initially told them that it was a
"suspicious persons" report and they didn't consider that a "hot" call. I
think the tapes will show that Tara was pretty clear as to what was going
on. The officers on the scene got an earful from me and then another earful
when the homeowners showed up. I don't think they took too kindly to our
outrage, but we expressed how I think we all feel about what's going on
around here lately.
Neighbors, we are in real BIG trouble here. We have absolutely no
protection from the thugs and thieves in this city. Tara and I saw it first
hand today and we are still upset about how helpless we were to stop this
crime. We basically watched the whole thing from beginning to end. This
city has a big problem with its police department. Not individual officers,
the overall organization and the 911 system. One of the officers was trying
to blame the miscommunication on the 911 dispatch and mentioned that since
the merger, things weren't being handled correctly.
There has been a rash of car break ins recently, and things appear to be
getting a little out of hand. The police won't even come out to fill out a
report on car break ins these days. This problem isn't going to go away
anytime soon. The police are understaffed and maybe poorly managed. We
know that they are underpaid and we don't have enough officers. We could go
on and on about this, but I think this is coming to a head in our
neighborhood and we need to probably have an emergency meeting (if the HNA
officers agree) to work through this with our police department and city
officials.
Thank you,
Robert Maner
